Barchester Towers by Anthony Trollope (1857)
Dr. Proudie gains the bishopric attached to Barchester’s cathedral when the incumbent bishop dies, raising his horrible wife to a position of power as soon as he accepts the appointment. When Mrs. Proudie’ s protégé, the loathsome hypocrite Obadiah Slope, becomes the bishops new chaplain, the denizens of Barchester consider it a call to battle.
