The speaker, Dr. Ruth Brennan, is a human resource management and communications consultant with extensive experience in Connecticut. She recently completed Gathering Family, a memoir of her family’s immigration from Eastern Europe at the turn of the twentieth century.
Spanning a century through stories, diaries and pictures, it is an immigrant’s true story. It starts with Ruth’s grandmother’s amazing turn-of-the-century journey across Eastern Europe, and tells the story of how three generations prospered in America. Set first in Eastern Europe and then in the Jewish world of New York’s Lower East Side and Queens, the book contrasts the generations with some remarkable stories.
And, yes, she is known as “Dr. Ruth.”

Titanic Week at Mystic Aquarium

Sea Research Foundation’s Mystic Aquarium presents “Titanic Week” Thursday, April 12 through Wednesday, April 18. Opening on April 12, guests will be among the first people to experience “Titanic – 12,450 Feet Below,” the Northeast’s largest, most captivating, permanent exhibit marking the centenary of Titanic.


Bringing the vessel’s timeless history to life, “Titanic – 12,450 Feet Below” will captivate minds with a glowing iceberg that is cold to the touch, a bi-level adventure area inspired by Titanic’s engine room, hands-on experiences that unfold Titanic’s lingering mysteries and modern deep-sea technology that led to Titanic’s eventual discovery.
Guests can also enjoy special Titanic themed activities throughout the week. Kids can build their own remotely operated vehicle (ROV) through an interactive game, learn how ships float by creating a floating raft, hear a story reading of “Pig on the Titanic: A True Story” and have a chance to send live transmissions around the world through shortwave radio and Southeastern Connecticut Radio Amateur Mobile System (SCRAMS). Amateur Radio, also known as ham radio, heard Titanic’s distress calls and, through information gathered by operators using their shortwave receivers, news was reported for the printed stories at the time of the tragedy.

This one day course will take place on Sunday, April 15th from 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. This course will meet all requirements set forth by the State of Connecticut for Boating/ Jet Ski license. Connecticut boaters must obtain a Safe Boating Certificate to operate on the waterways. The course is $70.00 a person and is good for ages 13 and up. Stephen Spignesi will present an illustrated lecture on the Titantic at 1:30 p.m. April 15 at the Waterford Library. Spignesi is a New York Times bestselling author who writes about historical biography, popular culture, television, film, American and world history, and contemporary fiction. He is also a university professor, novelist, poet, screenwriter, and musician.
Spignesi will discuss and sign his new book, “The Titanic For Dummies,” which examines the building of the ship, life onboard during its maiden voyage, tragic decisions made that fateful night, the discovery of the wreck, and the many controversies and theories that have emerged in the century since the sinking. 2012 Stan Wheeler Memorial Jazz Concert

Reunion is a group of Yale Jazz Ensemble alumni who, along with late Yale Law School Professor and trumpeter Stanton Wheeler, were early members of the YJE in the 1970s. Professor Wheeler continued to play with the Yale Jazz Ensemble until his death in 2007, and this is the fifth annual concert dedicated to his memory. Reunion members include well-known jazz artists Tim Moran (alto sax), Bob Kolb (tenor sax and flute), Gary Bennett (bari sax), Steve Perrett (trumpet), Tony Lom-bardozzi (guitar), Jeff Fuller (bass), Paul Sullivan (piano) and Frank Bennett (drums).

The YJE portion of the program will feature compositions by Yale students and alumni.
