Congregational Beth Shalom Rodfe Zedek, 55 East Kings Highway, Chester, CT

Mystery novelist David Handler, who regularly turns the Connecticut shoreline into a site of intrigue, will read from his newly released novel, "The Snow White Christmas Cookie," in a free program (with bagels and coffee) at 9:30 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 28, at Congregation Beth Shalom Rodfe Zedek, in Chester.

Handler, formerly a NYC Broadway, TV and film critic, moved to Old Lyme in 1996 and began the creation of a mystery series in novel form with local geographic interest, featuring the mismatched romantic crime-fighting duo of New York City film critic Mitch Berger and Connecticut State Resident trooper Desiree Mitry. He sets his novels in the town of Dorset, a stand-in for Old Lyme -- in this one, murder is committed during a 40-inch snowfall. This book is the ninth in the series; Handler is also the author of several other books.

Publishers Weekly says, "Handler's blend of suspenseful plot, skillful telling, and occasional splashes of comic relief add up to a heady cocktail of prime crime."

Handler's appearance is part of the synagogue's long-running "Books & Bagels" series. The Snow White Christmas Cookie will be available for sale and refreshments will be served. For further information, please contact the synagogue at 860-526-8920 or join us Sunday morning at 55 East Kings Highway, Chester CT.

While most ethnic groups deal with name changes, Jewish individuals can have multiple names, even two or three versions of personal names with spelling variations. Jewish immigrants often had a Hebrew name, a Yiddish name, and sometimes a name in the language of their native country. All of the names can have different spellings.
Upon immigration to the United States, they might Americanize their names. There are no rules for how these changes occur. The same person can show up in various records with four or five different personal names. Similar changes occurred to family names during immigration.
The speaker will “provide strategies for puzzling them out using linguistic and commonsense clues and cues” with examples. Everyone researching Jewish ancestors will benefit from attending.
