Art Exhibits/Openings

Lyman Allyn Art Museum, 625 Williams Street, New London, CT

the original artwork of James Gurney, the author and illustrator of Dinotopia, an illustrated book series that tells the story of an island where humans and sentient dinosaurs live together in harmony.
On view through February 2, the exhibition brings together paintings from Gurney’s well-loved books A Land Apart From Time, The World Beneath, Journey to Chandara, and First Flight, along with sketches and maquettes from Gurney’s studio. Dinosaur specimens from the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History, including a Deinonychus skull and a Tyrannosaurus tooth, will complement the paintings and illuminate the science behind Gurney’s art. Christ Church, 7 Elm St., Westerly, RI

The annual Festival of Lesson and Carols for Christmas at Christ Church Westerly, will be held on Sunday, December 30th at 5 pm. The Festival of Lessons and Carols for Christmas is based on nine lessons designed to portray the moving from darkness into light as the world at Christmas moves from darkness into the light of the Holy Birth. The Festival of Lessons and Carols has been a tradition at Christ Church for over three decades. The Christ Church Choir, under the direction of George Kent, Organist and Choirmaster, will perform an array of traditional Christmas hymns and carols by composers old and new. The Christmas lessons read by parish members of Christ Church, recount the ancient prophecies and the joy of Christ coming into the world.
